Contrasting with Black and White

We are only 5 days out from Halloween and I'm feeling SPOOKY! Whenever I think of this holiday, I think of cobwebs, candlelight, and the most iconic color combo: black and white. Are these colors perfect for the season? Absolutely! But they just so happen to be timeless and therefore are a mainstay in many homes. In fact, this look has been popular for centuries, with one example being flooring in the Palace of Versailles that dates back to the 1600s. Because of the versatility, it can feel both modern and vintage all at once.

Ideas for Contrast

Black and white is fun to play with as the boldest contrast possible - truly. From a scientific perspective, one is the absence of light and the other is pure light, so you cannot get any starker than pairing them together. There are so many ways to mix them for a little drama or nostalgia into any room, but here are some easy, foolproof ideas:

  • White walls with modern black gallery frames

  • Nero marquina floor tile with white marble shower tile

  • Cream sofa with black pillows or throw

  • Black cabinets with white countertops

  • White cabinets with matte black hardware and fixtures

  • Charcoal headboard and ivory bedding
