Make Your Home Office Work For You

I'm officially into week 5 of working from home. As someone who worked remotely for 3 years, I was able to get back into a rhythm relatively quickly. I know what I need to do to be successful while cranking at home. That being said, I know there are many people who are not in the same boat. Many of you have kiddos at home, or pets that create distractions, or struggle when outside of an office environment. Given that we will likely be working from home for a while longer now, it's worth creating an office space that you can succeed in.

Key Elements of a Home Office

  • Storage

  • Seating

  • Lighting

  • Accents

Storage is critical for any office space, but particularly one in your home. It's all about striking balance. For example, if you go with a minimalist desk, then look for a console or credenza to hide supplies, files and other materials. Whatever you do, make sure you have some options for hidden storage so you don't feel like you're working with clutter everywhere.

Your office chair is critical to make sure you're comfortable but also practicing good posture as you work. Without the right ergonomics, you can create serious issues for yourself down the road. Although it may seem fun to pick a chair purely on style, it's best to opt for one that is intended for work use. I really miss my standing desk right now, but there are home solutions for that as well.

Make sure you pick a spot where you get decent natural lighting if possible. If not, then add lighting to make sure you're supplementing some. This will not only helps with your mood and circadian rhythm, but studies show lighting impacts productivity as well. Do yourself a favor and make sure you've got a bright space to knock things out of the park.

Lastly, bring your personality to life with some accents! I don't know about you, but my desk at work has a bunch of pictures and a few objects that make me happy throughout the day. Do the same with your office - have some art or photos, pull some accents that bring you joy, and use colors that you love. We certainly hope that this working-from-home stretch won't last too much longer, but it's always great to have a space in your home where you can thrive and create.
